what does it take to be a spinning instructor at a health club.?

Question by abizman: what does it take to be a spinning instructor at a health club.?
I am interested in teaching spin classes at my local health club. Do you need any specific type of certification to teach these classes? Are they paid or do they just waive your gym membership dues? Thanks to all who respond! Happy Holidays,

It will vary from club to club. From what I’ve seen, there are usually a few things you MUST be able to do:

a) prove that you’re qualified to teach the class, probably through some certification that your club will recognize. They offer classes in this certification at my college, and it may be available at your club.

b) You must be in EXCELLENT physical shape, and be able to run a class– this is more difficult than it sounds. You should have an outline for the class, be able to keep it interesting, and at the end of the day leave everyone feeling satisfied and energized. That means—

c) being upbeat and always positive is a key. if you can’t keep your breath while spinning, chances are you need to get more fit. just think: you have to do everything just as hard as what the class is doing, plus stay energized, yell instructions, keep a track of time (always) and keep things moving.

As far as compensation goes, it’s usually an either hourly or contractual due that you’re paid, and a club membership may or may not be included depending on how nice the management is.

As with any organization, never underestimate how far a little networking can get you, also.

Q&A: Have you tried out any new and potentially faddish natural/alternative health products or services?

Question by Golly Molly: Have you tried out any new and potentially faddish natural/alternative health products or services?
I’m always reading things on the Internet or getting things in the mail for some great new product. Of course, there’s plenty of testimonials on how their health was totally turned around because of this product. I’m generally a sucker and want to go out and buy it right away.

So… what have you tried? And what are your thoughts on the stuff you’ve tried? Would you recommend it? Would you agree with the testimonials? Would you warn people away?

To get the juices flowing, here are a few I’ve brainstormed. Lest I offend anyone, I’m not calling these quack cures. These are just some of the products that make grand claims that I don’t always know if it’s believable:

Wheatgrass, blue-green algae, hypnotism, coloidal silver, pomegranate tea, mangosteen juice, diatomaceous earth…

Wheatgrass – excellent.

Blue-green algae – excellent.

Hypnotism – excellent.

Coloidal silver – excellent.

Pomegranate tea – never heard of the tea.

Mangosteen juice – freshly made at home would have health benefits. Pasteurised commercially brought juice, woud not.

Diatomaceous earth – never heard of it.

I only really try stuff that has been recommended by friends or my naturopath. All of my friends are very healthy, so I know I am getting good stuff.
